WEEK 65 | I’ve Been Hiding it Until Now.

April 7-13, 2025

Discovery.

Debut Taehyung

It’s all a scam. They’re trying to trick you.

These were the words Kim Taehyung heard from his grandmother, after Big Hit Entertainment called to invite him to a second audition to become an Idol trainee at their company. Taehyung was confused, he loved his grandmother deeply—he lived with her and she’d been raising him for the past several years. It was true he hadn’t intended to audition for the company, he’d only gone along because his friend was trying out. But he’d seen how professional they were, and when they’d asked him if he also wanted to try, he’d been so happy. He didn’t know what to think now. Was it really all a trick? Did they not actually want him?

Luckily staff members at Big Hit also reached out to Taehyung’s father to assure him that they were legit, and that they wanted his son to audition again, this time privately, not at an open casting call. The family believed what they were hearing, and they got Taehyung to that second audition. Which he passed easily.

Kim Taehyung was born December 30, 1995 in the Seo District of Daegu in South Korea. He has a younger brother and a younger sister. Most of his family are farmers, and Taehyung’s upbringing was extremely modest. He grew up in Geochang county, going to live with his grandmother when he was very young. He was extremely close with her, and also loved his parents deeply, so at first, he dreamed of becoming farmers like they were.

However, when Taehyung started to learn about music in school, and then listened to it on his own, he began to dream about performing on a big stage one day. He thought, “Maybe I can be a singer.” He told his father this, and received full support in response. His dad even said “Learn an instrument. Every singer should know how to play at least one instrument.”

Debut Taehyung

And so Taehyung learned how to play the saxophone for the next three years at school and would even play it during his Big Hit audition. “Why not?” he thought. And this is the mindset that carried him through all of his auditions and into his time as a trainee. He’d never given much thought to being an Idol, but why not give it a try?

Taehyung joined Big Hit and moved to Seoul in November of 2011. He moved into the dorms and, being a social creature by nature, immediately took to it and started trying to make friends. Affectionate and full of energy, Taehyung would say whatever was on his mind to whoever happened to be near him at the time. The other trainees began to view him with a sort of bewildered amusement. He was odd, but he was also kind. And he threw himself into lessons and practices with unbridled enthusiasm, knowing no fear and willing to try anything to the best of his ability.

Big Hit knew that Taehyung had talent, but they weren’t sure what to do with him at first. He’d seen “BTS” and their performance of “Paldogangsan” during his private audition with the company. (And thus was born Taehyung’s obsession with the Rap Line.) But at the time, BTS was just three rappers—Rap Monster, SUGA, and j-hope. He thought they were going to debut as a hip-hop rap trio, but hoped against hope that he could join Big Hit and become a part of their group.

Why not?

And that’s exactly what happened. Eventually, Big Hit decided to pivot and make BTS a hip-hop Idol group of both rappers and singers (who also danced), and Taehyung was selected to join. He was thrilled. But once the final lineup was decided, the company told him he was going to be their “Secret Weapon”—hidden until Debut. They didn’t want to reveal BTS as having seven members until the last minute. With his looks, and his mysterious new stage name—”V” for “Victory”, Big Hit thought Taehyung would be the perfect final boost to make BTS’ Debut legendary.

But Taehyung, having to watch his bandmates film things, and interact with fans without him, wasn’t so sure. He heard his grandmother’s voice again—“It’s all a trick” in the back of his mind. Were they testing him more? What if they decided NOT to debut him with the group? Suddenly, the affectionate and bubbly Taehyung was on the outside, looking in and wondering if he’d ever truly be a part of Bangtan Sonyeondan, or if he was just too different to succeed…

DAY ONE:

First reveal of V, 2013

For roughly six months, Taehyung stood off to the side, or hid behind doorways—always next to his fellow members, but never caught by the camera. He practiced hard, learning all the songs and choreographies, all the while unsure if he’d really be stepping out on that stage to perform them. He hadn’t let his dream extend beyond being a trainee at first, because he couldn’t believe he’d actually become one. But now that he was so close, he desperately wanted to debut, and he wanted to do so with BTS.

Finally, the company decided it was time, and Taehyung breathed a huge sigh of relief. On June 2, 2013, he made his first post on BTS’ social media, tweeting out a selfie of himself with an Iron Man cap covering up his face. The caption simply read “V”. A few hours later, Big Hit released his first official promotional photo and introduced V to the world.

V was immediately popular with the small, but loyal fanbase BTS had already gained. The other members have claimed on several occasions that the group had a significant spike in interest as soon as V was revealed to the public. He was attractive, that was obvious. He had a sweet smile, but could turn it into a brooding pout at a moment’s notice. His eyes always knew how to find the cameras, and he was immediately a natural in front of them—even during his goofiest moments.

2COOL4SKOOL Official Promotion Photo

…Of which he had many. Another reason for V’s popularity? His unpredictability. No one, not even his bandmates knew what he’d do or say next. Taehyung was a free spirit who said whatever was on his mind with no worry if others would understand what he was talking about. Often, in those early days, he spoke to the camera as though already in the middle of a grand joke the audience should have been playing along with.

Take his performance in the remixed version of “Beautiful” BTS released. While making the video, j-hope, Jimin, and Jung Kook take their assignment to woo the pretty girl co-starring with them very seriously. They engage with and sing to her calmly and sweetly. V, on the other hand, must have received a completely different script. Or, he was just vibing off the one he made up in his head. As they move through the location in the M/V, Taehyung can often be seen in the background, messing around with props, or holding his arms above his head for no reason. At the end, when he’s supposed to go in for his turn to “woo” the girl, he seems to lose all patience and tries to go in for a quick hug, which just makes her storm off.

The others are “angry” at him, but he just seems amused. Like that had been his plan all along…

Fun Fact:

V also stands for Variety.

If there is one thing V knows how to do, it’s work a crowd. Whether he’s MCing for a music show, dressing up as a ladybug fairy to distribute gifts, cuddling a puppy and trying to eat its ears, or being dared to walk and dance in some high heels and showing up everyone else in the room wearing them, he will always throw himself into the role with 110%. He always seems to know when he needs to go for shy or bold, cute or sexy, measured or loud—when V finds the camera, he owns it.

Below we’ve collected all of his variety show appearances from 2013-2016. His growth in the three years after BTS’ debut is astonishing, and also very entertaining to watch. Enjoy!

DAY TWO:

In the first year after they debuted, BTS spent a lot of time sitting around and waiting backstage. They were often on standby for performance time, or just scheduled much later in the day than other groups. (The pitfalls of being from a small, relatively unknown company—at the time.) As such, the members often found themselves with a lot of time on their hands. Mostly, they’d use it to catch up on sleep, but sometimes the camera caught them playing around too.

2014 Fansign Event

And when he wasn’t affectionately cuddled up against another member fast asleep, who was the most usual suspect for getting up to no good? You guessed it—V. In many early Bangtan Bombs, Taehyung can often be found singing and dancing along to whatever music is happening in the background, continuing his obsessive worship of the Rap Line, acting out dramatic scenes from movies (or just in his head), or running around and giggling. In one, he’s actually dressed up as a Bangtan Bomb, in order to explain what they are.

The other members either ignore him for the most part, or join in—dependent upon their mood. His most usual partners-in-crime are his fellow maknaes, Jimin and Jung Kook. Both are almost always willing to play along with Taehyung’s antics. You can tell that it thrills him when they join in.

DAY THREE:

“I NEED U” Official M/V

As BTS got a couple of years past their debut, and began to shift both their concept looks and the sound of their music, it was clear that the members were maturing. Their HYYH era (“The Most Beautiful Moment in Life”) brought heavy storylines and music videos that were filled with deeply emotional acting instead of just choreography.

V, though he had no experience acting, threw himself into his role and surprised not only himself, but also everyone around him with the passionate intensity he portrayed. His character’s storyline was by far the most disturbing, but Taehyung never hesitated.

Since their trainee days, Taehyung had always been over-the-top energetic, loud, and hard to pin down. He was goofy, often playing around with Jimin and Jung Kook, or trying to get his other hyungs to pay attention to him. Often, when he became too invested in annoying his fellow members, the staff would have to tell him to calm down. But as the years progressed, everyone (including ARMY) began to notice some big changes in him. The maturing themes in their music and media likely played a part in that.

The delineation between “V” and “Taehyung” was becoming more clear every day.

Fun Fact

Bangtan Sonyeondan, who was thought to be a six-member group… turned out to be 7.”

Because V was hidden until BTS’ debut, he was late to the VLOG party, but quick to adapt. After all, he’d been watching his fellow members record them for months, always sitting just off to the side out of sight of the camera. Normally full of energy and talking a mile a minute, Taehyung learned how to keep himself quiet during their filming because he didn’t want anyone to make him leave the room. He wanted to be a part of everything, even if he couldn’t be seen yet.

Once he did start filming his own YouTube VLOGs, V took to them immediately. He had so much to catch the fans up on, they had to get to know each other! His is very much a stream of consciousness style, even when you can tell he has notes on what he wants to talk about. The TMI was always plentiful with V in the early days as he talked about food trucks, trying out producing, and always showed up with funny or weird props (like a random lion backpack or a Michael Jackson doll).

It’s never a dull moment with this one. Enjoy!

DAY FOUR:

“Stigma” WINGS Short Film

2016 was an incredibly busy year for BTS. In May they released the last album of their HYYH trilogy, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever, and wrapped up their tour in Seoul with the “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life On Stage: Epilogue”.

Throughout that summer, they would be working on their next release, which was their second studio album, WINGS. For the first time, each member would have a solo song on the album, one that would fit the themes of the character they were playing in the storyline (also known as the “Bangtan Universe”). V’s song was “Stigma”, which he co-wrote.

WINGS Promotional Photo

The song (which we covered in full in Week 16) deals with regret and loss. Something V’s character was deeply familiar with in the “Bangtan Universe”, but also something Taehyung himself was experiencing as well. While he loved being a performer and getting to make music with BTS, the life of an Idol was never easy. As we discussed at the beginning of this week, Taehyung was extremely close to his family while growing up. Once BTS debuted and were constantly on the go, he saw less and less of them. His parents used to make the long drive to Seoul on the weekends when he was still a trainee to spend time with him, but it had been many years since they’d been able to do that with any regularity.

That September, Taehyung’s grandmother—his touchstone—the person with whom he’d been closest, passed away. He was performing onstage when it happened, and was informed shortly after. WINGS released the following month and I think the experience must have been cathartic for him in some way. He had something to pour his pain into, and you can literally hear it bleed through in his vocals during any live performance of “Stigma”.

In November, at BTS’ 3rd Muster, he shared the news of his grandmother’s passing with ARMY, breaking down in tears as he talked about how she raised him and how he wished he’d had more time to show her how successful BTS was becoming. To this day, he speaks of her with such reverence and warmth—I’m sure wherever she is, she’s smiling and watching over him still.

Fun Fact:

“You think this is a joke?” Repeat x1,000.

By now, we’ve learned a lot about the age hierarchy that exists in Korean society. Younger people are meant to always show deference and respect to those older than themselves, even if the difference in age is only a year. Eventually, if people become really close, they can choose to drop formal speech with each other, but the younger is still expected to use informal honorifics showing respect, such as using the terms hyung or noona (“older brother” or “older sister”).

When two people are born in the same year, they call each other chingu (“friend”) because they are the same age. Jimin and V were both born in 1995, so they are “same age friends”. Same age friends can immediately be informal with each other and don’t need to use honorifics even if one was born months earlier than the other.

When Jimin and V met, they both clicked and clashed immediately. Their friendship was instantaneous—they just understood each other. Both are very emotional and affectionate, but also goofy idiots who love to laugh. They became nearly inseparable, and when you’re in each other’s pockets as much as they were in the early days, fighting is inevitable too. Jimin and V are just as quick to temper with each other as they are to laughter, but they also never hold grudges. (Plus we’ve gotten some pretty amazing music from their fights over the years!)

Their special “soulmate” (their words, not mine) bond has been captured many times on camera, but there’s nothing quite like it when they decide to go LIVE or record content together. Whether they’re teaching us provincial dialect, acting out dramatic scenes they make up on the spot, or pretending to strip for us, it’s always an adventure with the 95z…

DAY FIVE:

After the gut-wrenchingly emotional performances that V gave in M/Vs like “I NEED U”, “Run” and “Stigma”, it’s no wonder that directors started knocking on his door with scripts for movies and dramas. He’d never considered acting that much before, but when BTS began transitioning to creating more story-based visuals to accompany their music, V took to it naturally and discovered he liked immersing himself in a character arc.

In early 2016, Taehyung had the opportunity to audition for a small role in an upcoming television series called Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. He passed the audition with flying colors and was hand-picked by the director to play Seok Han-sung, the youngest character. Yoon Sung-sik, while on press promotions for the show, was asked why he decided to cast the young Idol. He described the character as being bright, pure, and untainted. He needed someone who would radiate all of those traits easily, while still endearing the audience immediately. Yoon went on to sum up with:

Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth

I fell for Kim Taehyung the moment I met him.

Even though V had no prior professional acting experience, after hearing him read through some scripts the director was convinced he could do it. So, when production for the show began in March, V started splitting his time between the set of Hwarang and his promotional activity as part of BTS.

And though his role was small, it was still pivotal to the overall plot, and Taehyung had to work hard. He was often even more exhausted than normal as he shuttled back and forth between jobs. But he enjoyed the experience and became quite close with the cast—in particular the actors playing the two male leads—Park Seo-joon and Park Hyung-sik. Being a few years older than Taehyung, they took him under their wings and soon they all became fast friends.

Through Seo-joon, this friend group would eventually extend to include fellow actor Choi Woo-shik, and rapper and singer, Peakboy. The five men started hanging out a lot together—so much so they named themselves the WOOGA Squad. (WOOGA is an abbreviation. It stands for “Woori-ga Gajok-inka?” which translates to “Are We Family?”) In this group, V is the maknae (youngest) and definitely gets spoiled by the other four.

The other members of BTS were really proud of Taehyung for his acting role, and supported him wholeheartedly—though there may have been a little good-natured ribbing over the fact that he made new friends on the show and was spending so much time with them. One day, while filming some behind-the-scenes at “Show Champion”, a few of the members teased him, claiming he loved his “Hwarang hyungs” more than them. “He says ‘I love you’ to them while looking at us!” Jung Kook exclaimed. V took it in good stride, knowing they were just joking around with him.

To this day, he is still very close with his WOOGA hyungs. He’s worked on music with Peakboy, and in 2022 the five of them filmed IN THE SOOP: Friendcation together for Disney Plus. It’s a spin-off of the original IN THE SOOP series starring BTS, and then Seventeen. The five friends went on a friendship trip for four days and three nights, and the show documented all the candid moments they shared together.

Bangtan Bubble: Do you want to see more acting from V in the future?

Let us know your answer in the comments below or on social media (include #BangtanBubble)!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Kim Taehyung we met in 2013, is not the same Taehyung we see in 2016. Although he’s not completely different either. At first he was a quirky teen who didn’t have many friends or an outlet for his random thoughts, bursts of energy, and sweet, mischievous nature. When he got the chance to join Big Hit and become a part of BTS, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to discover if there was more out there for him.

Next week we’ll up the destructive ante and get into (tee hee) V from 2017 to 2021. There will be a lot of growth, a lot of pain, and a lot of REALLY beautiful, but SO painful eye contact. Come back to see me flail!

Side Quest

Tae Tae is Just Here for the Vibes.

And VIBES are what you’re going to get anytime you manage to catch Taehyung LIVE.

Though V is outgoing and makes friends everywhere he goes, he also gets shy and awkward when on a livestream by himself. If he doesn’t have a set plan, or another member with him, he might start to panic.

Inevitably, after the panic, Tata Mic Face will come out, and he’ll usually start playing music to listen to with ARMY. This is how “Tae Tae FM” was born, V’s version of DJing a setlist of his music recommendations for us.

Here we have all of V’s LIVES (solo and group) from 2015-2016. A lot of these are post concert, so there’s shenanigans and tomfoolery to be had. And, as always, his sweet, boxy smile. Enjoy!
